14 July - Mount Coot-tha: Beginner's Navigation


By the end of this day, you will be able to:

  • read and understand a topographic map (and other types of maps)

  • utilise a compass independently with either a route card or a map and apply to real life application – including generating their own route card to use when navigating off-track

  • troubleshoot any errors in judgement/location to extricate themselves to a known location (to a practical extent)

8.30am - 4pm

How The Day Goes:

8.30am - meet at Gap Creek Reserve Picnic Area, Mount Cootha (click for map)

The course will cover:

  • Map types and key points

  • Compass intro: basic use and interference sources

  • Compass intro applied to maps: declinations, resections, manual pacing method, mark setting

  • Route cards

  • Practical trials: compass use, route cards, off-track navigation using route cards

There will be some bushwalking involved with the practicals!

The day will officially conclude at 4pm.

Getting There:

If you are driving from Brisbane City, allow at least 30 minutes.


  • Instruction from a qualified & experienced guide

  • All technical equipment


  • Food & water - please ensure you bring at least 2 litres of water, snacks and lunch. There will be morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea breaks.

  • If possible, please also bring a camp chair for the theory sessions! There is some park bench space but to be sure, camp chairs are advisable.

  • Transport to + from meeting point

  • Personal clothing + insurance

Cancellation Policy

In the event of bad weather, we will aim to re-organise the event.

If you're unable to make the new date it we will offer you a full refund. 

No refund on tickets on cancellations 7 days out from the event. 

No refunds on no shows.


We started She Went Wild with the aim to empower and enable women to gain their footing in the outdoors and kickstart a lifetime of adventure and so we hope to see you on this workshop :)
