Blue Mountains: Beginner's Navigation


The ability to navigate using a map + compass opens up your world to off-track adventures as well as keeps you safe.

Join us and the qualified guides from the Australian School of Mountaineering for a special* 1-day Wilderness Navigation Course in the Blue Mountains!

*This course is normally 2 days but we have partnered with ASM to bring to you this more accessible 1-day version


You have a choice of the following dates:

Saturday 17 August

Saturday 21 September


8.45am - 5pm

How The Day Goes:

8.45am - meet at the Australian School of Mountaineering Office at 66 Katoomba Street, Katoomba (2-minute walk from Katoomba train station).

The course will cover:

  • Introduction into compass and map and how they work

  • Magnetic declination

  • UTM grid references

  • Resections

  • Bearings

  • Dead reckoning

  • Terrain association

  • Walking an off-track route from a route card

We'll be back at the ASM Office no later than 5pm.

You'll receive a detailed itinerary of the day after registration.


  • Instruction from nationally qualified & highly experienced guides

  • All technical equipment

  • Lunch


  • Transport to + from meeting point

  • Personal clothing + insurance

  • This course will not cover GPS use

Cancellation Policy

In the event of bad weather, we will aim to re-organise the event.

If you're unable to make the new date it we will offer you a full refund. 

No refund on tickets on cancellations 7 days out from the event.
