Women's Navigational Workshop

An important skill for every outdoor adventurer is to know how to navigate with a map and compass. These navigation aids are precision instruments, which require some experience and good training to be effective. Our instructors are expert navigators who are highly qualified in teaching these essential techniques.
The subjects covered during this one day workshop include:
- Maps Types, Use in the Field, Features, Contours, Grid References,
- Compass Features, Types, General Usage, Field Bearings, Map Bearings, Resections, Marching on a Compass Bearing
- Route Planning, Route Selection, Route Cards, Time and Distance Estimation
- Emergency Navigation Techniques using the Sun and the Stars
- GPS Features, Basic Operating Functions, Use and Limitations
During this workshop participants will have the opportunity to test their newly acquired skills on a short navigation trek.
Meeting Place & Starting Time
We meet at the ASM office, which is located within the Paddy Pallin Adventure Centre at 166 Katoomba Street, Katoomba. From Katoomba railway station, go down Katoomba Street and you will find the ASM office located on the left side at the bottom of the hill.
The start time is 8.45am, participants should plan to arrive at the ASM office around 15 minutes prior to the nominated meeting time. If you are running late please make every effort to call our office (Tel 02 4782 2014) as early as possible.

Personal Clothing Requirements
Please bring or wear the following clothing; comfortable closed footwear such as lightweight hikers or trail shoes, good wool socks, long pants, warm sweater or fleece jacket, T-shirts and long sleeve shirt, sun hat, rain jacket or poncho, rain pants if you have them, a set of thermal underwear and a warm cap, a pair of close fitting work or gardening gloves. ASM have a large stock of outdoor clothing and equipment that can be loaned to course participants if required, however it is preferable that participants supply their own gear and clothing where possible.
Personal Equipment Requirements
All specialist survival aids, materials and other resources are supplied on the course, if you have any survival kit items or equipment you would like to try out, then please feel free to bring these along. ASM has one of the largest and best stocked outdoor retail outlets in Australia, workshop participants will have the opportunity to purchase last minute items prior to leaving for the course. The retail store offers an extensive range of outdoor equipment, books, maps, clothing, footwear and other adventure gear at very competitive prices. In addition, participants will be entitled to a 20% discount on all full price equipment purchases on the day please feel free to ask your instructors for appropriate gear options.
You will need the following:-
- Day Pack (20 Litres)
- 2 litres water capacity
- Sun cream
- Insect repellant
- Personal Medication
- Compass, map case * Can be supplied by ASM at no charge.
- Small notepad and pencil (very handy)
The area in which we run this course can be quite cold in the mornings and at night, with the days usually being warm and sunny in summer and cold in winter, this outdoor workshop is run year round in all weather conditions.
Allow an hour and a half travel time from Sydney to Katoomba.
Lunch and drinks are provided, if you have any special dietary requirements please let us know ASAP so we can plan for you by the 7th of December by emailing info@shewentwild. You are welcome to bring any personal snack food you wish.
This event in non refundable if cancelled less than 2 weeks before event date. Refund will be available to anyone that has had a family bereavement or medical issue (certificate required for refund) . Cancelation must be given in written format. Tickets are transferable
