Camping hacks that you wish you knew sooner
The great outdoors, the fresh air, the mucky shoes, that log fire smell that remains weaved into the fibres of your jacket for days after your trip, the food that you’d never consider cooking at home that tastes like it deserves all the Michelin stars once in the wilderness...
It’s easy to fall in love with camping... but can we make it easier?
Here are 10 hacks to try out on your next camping trip
1. WHAT IS THAT YOU SAGE?
Not only great in a stew, sage repels mosquitoes! Place some sage in your campfire and the smell is sure to ward off any pesky mosquitos. Keep in mind the greener the leaf, the more smoke - the drier, the quicker they burn, so make sure you have plenty on hand.
2. MULTI PURPOSE TAMPONS
Don’t want to carry toxic smelly fire lighters? Tampons make awesome fire lighters! Pull apart the tampon to expose the highly-flammable individual fibres—these will burst into flame with just a spark from a ferro rod or cigarette lighter.
(as do Dorito chips but I’d rather save them for snacks!)
3. CAMPING HACKS
Fancy some tunes but don’t have portable speakers? Cut a phone-sized slit in an empty toilet roll, add some plastic cups and blast out your favourite tunes.
The old ‘place phone in a (empty!) glass’ also works nicely.
4. LET THERE BE LIGHT
Tie your head torch to an empty water bottle for some less intense and direct light beams and more tranquil mood lighting.
Love eggs in the morning but there is no way you can keep an egg from cracking on a hike? Crack your eggs in a bottle before you leave. Voila!
6. MUCKY CAMPING BOOTS?
Cover the bottom of your shoes with a shower cap. The shower cap will act as the perfect barrier between your mucky boots and your other gear.
7. GOODBYE FOGGY WINDOWS
Cat litter is great at absorbing moisture. Do your car windows fog up after a wet night camping and all your wet gear is in the car? Fill a few socks with cat litter and leave these in the car. Sorted.
8. SUN SHIELD
Hate the sun induced sweat-fest first thing in the morning as you clamber out of your tent? Place a reflective blanket over your tent at night to re-direct those early morning sunbeams.
9. WATERPROOF MATCHES
Is rain scheduled on your next trip? Dip your matches in candle wax and let it set. Voila, waterproof matches. Nail polish works well too!
10. KEY FLOATS
Attach your key to a cork - and ensure it never sees rock bottom.
